| I really liked shooting these last three photos, but the one above looked so clean that I didn't want this photo to be so similar. So, I paid less attention to placement of the photo: I included only a little piece of the ladder and the wall in the top right corner. |
This looks like your strongest series yet. You did a great job on getting your darkest and lightest values in all your photos and has a nice contrast balance. The first three are especially your strongest in the series. I think you made a good choice on using a white background in the photo studio with your friend and having her wear dark clothing especially in your third photo has a good composition on how you have your friend her sitting which creates some interesting negative spaces.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Sonja that your use of contrast is excellent. I enjoy the consistency of the similar tones in especially the three last photographs. I would say to be careful of missing some texture in the areas with the most light because your second photograph is well-textured, but could be cropped to focus on said texture. Overall, I love your direct approach to a classic black and white collection.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed your series, and my favorite was the first photo. I think it has great contrast between the trees and the snow, and how it also has happy medium with the shadows from the trees and snow
ReplyDeleteNice explorations with black and white photography this week! The first two images definitely have a very intense sense of lighting in them - and the high contrast adds to that. They feel like very graphic and bold uses of black and white - rather than soft, quiet uses. This is an interesting choice of treatment for photographs of nature but works - and especially with the railroad tracks. The portraits turned out very well! Those have a nice use of softer lighting - there is a gradient of lighting that seems to come from one corner and more diagonally. The softness of the light is made more graphic with the use of a white wall and black clothing - give the soft-lit portraits a bit more of an edgy feel.
ReplyDeleteI'm a fan of your photographs that you took for this week's exercise. I really love the first two. You were smart and utilized the snow on the ground and was able to use the natural light wisely. The back light in the first photo is very nicely used and is also a great use of wide depth of field.
