That's awsome that you are a Book Arts major! If you haven't visited the Special Collections at the UW-Milwaukee library yet you should! They have an amazing collection of hand made / artists books. While it's really fun to see this work, I'm afraid that the idea/images are missing the point of performance. These definitely are falling under what I would consider documentation. It makes sense to document a performative work if that work is temporary (like Goldsworthy's earth works), but in this case the books are the art and they will continue to exist... If you decided to photograph a book and then continue photographing it as you ripped it apart or burned it... performance. (Not that I would recommend doing that!) Does that make sense?
ReplyDeleteThe array of color in the first four images is great! I would have liked to see that continue into your fifth image. The face that the first four images are on the carpet, my mind wants to see it in the fifth, also. Placement of the card should have considered background more. Your series is composed and lit well and cohesively-excluding the last. The depth and layers the books, supplies and the miniature book 'make up' is well developed-despite the flatness of the background. I like that you shot the first three looking down upon the supplies while the accordion book and card have true background depth.
